One of the most common questions I get is:“How do I get bare spots in my lawn to fill in?”It’s a fair question. Everyone wants a thick, healthy, green lawn. But the answer depends on several factors—especially the size of the bare area.The first thing to understand is that grass fills in from the outside in. Grass doesn’t magically appear in the middle of a bare spot. It has to spread into that area from the surrounding turf.If you’re trying to cover a large bare area quickly, sod is usually your best option. But for smaller bare spots, you can often get great results with a little effort and about $20 worth of materials.Most bare spots exist for a reason. The soil may be compacted, poorly drained, or lacking the structure grass runners need to spread. Before the grass can move in, you have to give it a better place to grow.My Simple Bare Spot Repair Method✅ Step 1: Rake out the area thoroughly and remove any debris, dead grass, or accumulated junk.✅ Step 2: Fill and level the low area with play sand. Most bare spots are slightly lower than the surrounding lawn.✅ Step 3: Top the sand with a layer of topsoil or soil conditioner. I’m using a basic bag of soil conditioner that costs around $5.✅ Step 4: Use the back side of your rake to smooth everything out and blend it into the surrounding lawn.✅ Step 5: Water the area well. The sand and soil will settle naturally. Make any leveling adjustments needed and water again.🚨 Step 6 (Most Important): Do NOT mow over the repaired area until the grass has had time to spread. Running a mower over it too soon can scatter your soil, undo your work, and slow the recovery process.Keep the area watered, be patient, and let the grass runners do their thing.For this demonstration, I’m repairing a Centipede lawn, but this method works well on most warm-season turf grasses.A little effort now can save you from looking at those bare spots all summer. ...
